Sheffield United FC to face points deduction upon return to the EFL

Cases

Following instigation of disciplinary proceedings by the English Football League (“the EFL”) an independent Disciplinary Commission has determined that Sheffield United Football Club are to be deducted two points at the start of the next season the Club is in the EFL’s jurisdiction, with a further two points suspended until the end of that same season.

The sanction relates to the 2022/23 season (when the Club was last competing in the Championship), when the Club defaulted on a number of payments to other Clubs. The defaults cumulatively were in excess of 550 days.

The sanction follows the Club’s unsuccessful challenge to the EFL’s jurisdiction to refer the Club to the Disciplinary Commission under EFL Regulation 52.2.6.

Ruth Kennedy (led by Adam Lewis KC, Blackstone Chambers) acted for the EFL throughout the proceedings (instructed by Clarion Solicitors).
